The Balloonists, 2010

Ferrin Gallery, Pittsfield, MA

This series was made during an artist residency at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA from July – September 2009. Employing the Museum’s collection as source material, the works are populated with images lifted directly from historical paintings, from 17th century Dutch landscapes, to Hudson River School imagery. The paintings in The Balloonists describe a fable about the end of the world, and escape by way of hot air balloon.  On another level the paintings suggest themselves as vehicles of escape, and explore the notion of levity as a portable place of refuge.
